ed near Pemaquid Point. The short-lived Popham Colony, at the mouth of the Kennebec River, built America's first transatlantic trader, the Virginia, in 1607. Until 1819 Maine was a part of Massachusetts. It was admitted to the Union in 1820.

Maine Parks, Recreation Areas, & Historical Landmarks:

State Parks - Water-related activities, hiking, biking, various other sports, picnicking and visitor centers, as well as camping, are available in many of these areas. Most state parks and historic sites are open seasonally, 9 am-sunset; Popham Beach, John Paul Jones Memorial and Reid are open year-round. Most areas have day-use and/or parking fees, $1.50-$3/person; annual pass, $40/vehicle, $20/individual. Camping May-Oct (areas vary), nonresidents $11-$17/site, residents $9-$13/site; reservations fee $2/night. Camping reservations may be made by mail to the Bureau of Parks and Lands, Station #22, Augusta 04333, Attn Reservation Clerk; in person at the office of the Bureau of Parks and Lands in Augusta; by phone, 207/287-3824 or 800/332-1501 (ME). Maine historic sites fee $2.50-$3. Pets on leash only in most parks. No dogs on beaches (or at Sebago Lake campground). Maine Weather and Climate:
Maine is a large state affected by several different weather patterns. Coastal temperatures are more moderate than inland temperatures, and fog is common in spring and fall. In general, winters are cold and snowy. Summers are filled with warm, sunny days and cool, clear nights. Fall's famous "nor'easters" can bring high tides, gale-force winds, and huge amounts of rain to the coastal areas.

Nonresident fishing license: $51; 12-15 yrs, $8; 15-day license, $39; 7-day license, $35; 3-day license, $22; 1-day license, $10. Nonresident hunting license for birds and animals except deer, bear, turkey, moose, bobcat, and raccoon: $56; includes all legal game species: $86. These fees do not include agent fees, which range from $1-$2.
